How is Leather Dyed? Mastering the Art of Leather Dyeing

Before the leather can be dyed to any color desired, it must be processed so that it is preserved and its strength and integrity are maintained. Leather dyeing, or colouring, started as an ancient practice eons ago, but skilled artisans developed methods to mix natural or man-made dyeing agents to achieve their desired results. Most of our leather goes through a process of being immersed in a large barrel filled with the desired color dye and rotated for a time, during which the ink color soaks into the material. After this, the leather is rinsed and left to dry in another special process which smoothens and straightens it.

The Coloring Process In-Depth:
Different methods are currently used when dying leathers. One involves soaking the leather in an aniline dye after it has been tanned. This is absorbed into the fabric of the leather and creates a consistent color throughout. If you took a piece of this leather and turned it over, you would see that the color is consistent from the top to the underside. This type of dyeing is the result of using the large dying drums to spin ink into the leather after the tanning process has been completed.
Conversely, some leather is not dyed throughout but is rather sprayed with a top coat of pigment paint. This process is often faster or more economical and can result in a lesser quality leather product that may show signs of wear and discoloration more rapidly than the fully dyed leathers. However, this method can be done with care in order to maintain high quality.
Protecting the Leather from Water:
Most leather that has been created for fashion, furniture, or car interiors, receives a final top coat of pigment which protects the material from soaking in moisture. To give an example, if water were dropped onto the surface, the drops would run off and not seep through. The obvious benefit of this in our jackets is to keep you dry and warm!
Another consideration that the leather dyeing professional must consider is how much of a protective layer they want to apply. Adding more of the protective pigment will increase the water resistance, but will harden the leather to a degree.
Leather that hasn’t received this layer will be porous and will allow water to soak through but will have a much softer feel and texture. Therefore, striking a proper balance of water-resistance while maintaining a comfortable texture is key to producing great leather.
